Steve Briggs, or Briggs around the office, is a fantastic human and a highly skilled and innovative developer. We asked him a couple of questions and here are his answers…
What is the coolest thing you’ve had the pleasure of developing?
I’d say the things I’ve developed for myself that were my own ideas are the coolest (at least to me!) and they also give me the most pleasure. My side project for the last few years has been audio QR Codes, and I’m currently expanding that platform to include beacons. Beacons are really exciting to me right now, because they don’t require scanning or entering a URL – they just show up on your phone. They’ll be great for stores, restaurants, museums, zoos, real estate and the like. You’ll be seeing them everywhere pretty soon!
Where do you search for inspiration when you’re feeling stuck on a project?
I can’t remember really getting stuck on a client project in awhile. There’s almost always a deadline, so getting stuck isn’t really an option. A lot of what I do is figuring out solutions to problems, so that’s often challenging and fun. For my own projects though, I like reading startup books and biographies of entrepreneurs to keep me inspired. They always talk about pushing through when things get tough or you lose motivation. You have to think about the long term rewards and persevere.
What is one thing you wish someone had told you 10 years ago?
Buy Bitcoins! Although that was actually more like 5 years ago when they were 6 cents apiece. They’re about $250 now, although they did get up to almost $1000. Seriously though, I can’t really think of anything I wish I knew then that I know now. Hey, it’s all about the journey, right? I am serious about Bitcoins, though!
Who has had the greatest influence on your career?
Richard Branson would be the closest thing to my idol. He’s a billionaire who’s created lots of companies, but he’s still a nice and generous guy. He’s passionate about the environment and climate change and truly wants to make the world a better place. And he’s also really into space, like me! Except he’s actually going to take people there!
